Discover Cretan Wine: A unique September experience in Heraklion

If you are visiting Crete in September, there is a good reason to spend one of your evenings in Heraklion. On 12 and 13 September 2026, the historic Loggia in the centre of the city will become a meeting point for people who love wine, with the Cretan Wine Gallery bringing together 31 wineries and more than 100 Cretan wines. For a traveller, this is a chance to discover a part of the island that is often overlooked. Crete is known for its beaches, ancient ruins and mountain villages, but its wine is just as closely connected to the island's history and landscape.

What makes the event particularly appealing is that you don't need to be a wine expert to enjoy it. The Cretan Wine Gallery follows a self-pour format, allowing visitors to move around freely and taste different wines at their own pace. Sommeliers will be available to offer advice and explain the different varieties, which is useful if you are discovering Cretan wine for the first time. For a couple, it can be a relaxed and enjoyable evening: taste a few wines, decide which ones you like, and perhaps make a note of the bottles you want to look for during the rest of your holiday.

And there is plenty to discover. Crete has its own distinctive grape varieties, including Vidiano, Vilana, Dafni, Thrapsathiri, Kotsifali and Liatiko, many of which you are unlikely to encounter regularly outside Greece. Some produce fresh, aromatic whites that are particularly enjoyable in the warm Cretan climate, while others create richer and more structured reds. Trying several of them side by side gives you a much better sense of the island's wine identity than simply ordering a glass of house wine with dinner.

The setting is also part of the experience. The Loggia, one of Heraklion's most impressive Venetian buildings, stands in the heart of the old city. You can spend the afternoon exploring Heraklion's streets, visiting the market or archaeological museum, and then return to the centre in the early evening when the temperatures are more comfortable. The wine event runs from 18:00 to 22:30, making it easy to combine with dinner afterwards. A table at a traditional restaurant, accompanied by some local dishes and perhaps another Cretan wine, would be a fitting way to finish the evening.

If you enjoy the experience, don't stop there. September is grape-harvest season in Crete, so the wine event can be the beginning of a small road trip into the countryside. The wine-producing areas around Archanes and Peza, just outside Heraklion, are particularly interesting at this time of year. The landscape has a different atmosphere during the harvest, with vineyards full of activity and villages returning to their seasonal rhythms. Renting a car gives you the freedom to visit a winery, stop for lunch in a village and explore the countryside without having to follow a fixed tour itinerary.

The Cretan Wine Gallery is therefore more than simply an evening of wine tasting. It is an opportunity to get closer to one of the traditions that has shaped Crete for thousands of years, while meeting some of the people who are giving the island's wine a modern identity. If your holiday happens to coincide with 12 or 13 September 2026, this is one of those experiences worth adding to your itinerary, especially if you would like to see a side of Crete that goes beyond the usual tourist attractions.
