Delicious cretan cheese pie (mizithropita)

Christmas magic is all around… Moreover, once you taste the famous Cretan cuisine, you can never forget it. For that reason let’s try to cook traditional Cretan cheese pies (myzithropites) for New Year's Eve dinner. The recipe is easy and its taste totally unique. Ingredients for 30 pieces:

 - 300 grams Cretan white cheese (xinomyzithra)

- Olive oil

- Honey

For dough’s preparation you will need:

- 500 grams flour

- 50 grams olive oil

- 50 grams raki (Traditional Cretan drink)

- the juice of ½ lemon

- 1 tablespoon salt

- warm water

 

Preparation

Step 1

Start with the dough. Pour all ingredients in a bowl and knead until a fluffy dough is created. Cover the bowl with a towel for about 30 minutes.

Step 2

Divide the dough into balls like small walnuts.

Step 3

Mash white cheese (xinomyzithra) with water until they become smooth and get rid of all the pellets.

Step 4

Get into your hands a ball of dough and shape it on a cutting board or tray with a diameter of 8 cm. Pour in the cheese filling and pinch the edges. Continue with the rest. In a pan pour some olive oil and fry the small cheese pies until they get a ruby ​​color.

 

Tip: You can serve the Cretan cheese pies either plain or with some honey.
